Why we recommend Tokyo Powder

The Magnesium Carbonate in Tokyo Powder comes from the sea and is a bi product from when salt is extracted. Most other chalk brands get their Magnesium Carbonate from mines.

There are two big advantages to this:

  • the chalk is more environmentally friendly.

  • the chalk is more pure. Magnesium Carbonate from mining often contains traces of a lot of different heavy metals which can give you itching and eczema. It may also contain Calcium Carbonate, which is counterproductive.

Regarding the environmental aspect Tokyo Powder is the most transparent company producing climbing chalk.

  • the chalk is part of a circuit loop. When salt is extracted, carbon dioxide is produced which is used to react with magnesium and Magnesium Carbonate is formed. The Magnesium Carbonate is used by climbers, gets on the rocks and washes away with the rain. When it hits the ground it gets ionized and decomposes and eventually reaches the sea again.

  • Tokyo Powder reports all its carbon dioxide emissions.

  • all electricity used comes from non-fossil sources.

  • they have chosen to collaborate with financial institutes that doesn’t invest in fossil fuels or nuclear power.

Tokyo Powder does not have a uniform particle size which means that the chalk will stick better to your hands and be less slippery.

We salute their holistic way of thinking, plus it’s a really good chalk.
